The ED137 is a module that is intended to be an add-on to sequencers and programme controllers like the ES23 and ES28. Those modules have 3 or 4 outputs, each of which has independent voltage levels for each stage, but which are all presented at the same time i.e. the 'rows' are all output in parallel.

By patching these 'rows' in to the ED137, the user is presented with the ability to access these individual 'rows' as a single 'row' effectively putting them in series. This means the user has access to longer sequence patterns, for example a single ES23 normally outputs 3 rows of 4-stage outputs. When connected to the ED137 this becomes a 'single row' of 12 outputs.

Of course the ED137 need not only be connected to the sequence/programmer type of modules but can also be used as a very basic 4-step sequencer or, more correctly, 4-way switch.
